Nonprofit raises funds for safety bed for Stockton child
Founded in 2026 in Springfield, Missouri, A Bed for Izzy (ABFI) is a nonprofit organization that provides medically necessary safety beds for children and adults with developmental disabilities who cannot safely sleep in a traditional bed or crib.
These beds can be life-changing for individuals who struggle with nighttime wandering, limited safety awareness, seizures or other challenges that make traditional sleeping arrangements unsafe.
As an entirely volunteer-run nonprofit, ABFI raises funds through individual campaigns for each person it serves. Once a family is approved, the organization shares their story and works to raise the funds needed to purchase a safety bed suited to their specific needs.
The beds cost between $10,000 and $20,000, and insurance companies deny the vast majority of requests.
The organization is currently conducting a fundraising campaign for Wyatt, an 11-year-old boy from Stockton.
Sarah Lewright, founder and president of ABFI, grew up in Stockton and said the campaign holds special meaning for her.
“This particular drive is close to home, and sharing more of Wyatt’s story is meaningful for the Cedar County community, as local support can make a tangible difference for a family in need,” Lewright said.
Wyatt, described as a happy-go-lucky child with a kind demeanor, has sensory needs and is at risk of injuring himself, including hitting his head on hard surfaces and wandering at night. These challenges make it difficult for his family to ensure his safety throughout the night.
“We rely on the generosity of individuals, businesses, grants, and community fundraisers to make the beds possible,” Lewright said.
In addition to Wyatt’s campaign, the organization is currently raising funds to provide safety beds for two other children in southern Missouri.
