The El Dorado Springs High School speech and debate team participated in a district competition at Carthage High School Friday, March 2, and Gavin McNeely qualified for state competition in humorous interpretation and storytelling.

Along with McNeely, El Dorado Springs was represented by Allaura Stockbauer, Parker Smith, Taryn Dipman and Samantha Cox.

McNeely, Stockbauer, Smith and Dipman reached the finals.

"The EHS team has done an amazing job this year," coach Joel Ybarra said.

"The students have competed against some of toughest schools in and out of the district. Words cannot truly describe how proud I am of everyone on the team and how much work they have put in this year. I don't think of these students as students, I think of them as my children. Helping them achieve their hopes, desires and dreams is what teaching is all about. I am most proud of how much they have increased their self-confidence."
